The news emerged from Barcelona, where Mobile World Congress kicked off this weekend. LG will make a version of the Google smartwatch, this person said, but added that other manufacturers may also be involved. The South Korean company also makes Google’s Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 smartphones.A Google spokeswoman declined to comment. CNET reported news of the smartwatch earlier Sunday, stating that it is likely to be unveiled at a Google developer event in June with its operating system disclosed by Google in March.

Google’s entry into the smartwatch category would create more competition with Samsung Electronics, also its most important partner. The Korean electronics giant launched its first smartwatch last September and sells more smartphones running Google’s Android mobile operating system than any other Manufacturer. Details about the launch of Google’s smartwatch come on the heels of Samsung’s announcement at Mobile World Congress that its next smartwatch will be powered by Tizen, an operating system that Samsung has helped develop with Intel and others. That choice signals that Samsung is trying to reduce its dependence on Google for the software to power its devices. The smartwatch category is getting crowded fast. Apple has been developing its own according to people familiar with the matter and CEO Tim Cook said in February that Apple is planning to enter “new categories” of products.
Google’s entry into the smartwatch category shows how the company remains serious about designing its own hardware even as it plans to sell its Motorola handset business to Lenovo for $2.9 billion. Besides the smartwatch and its Nexus-line of smartphones and tablets, Google plans a mass-market release later this year for its Internet-connected eyewear, Google Glass, the company has said.It also added to its hardware portfolio when it purchased Nest Labs, maker of smart thermostats and smoke alarms, earlier this year.
