HTC ONE Plus / to feature a 3100mAh battery and some new “mystery tech”

The OnePlus One is a pretty interesting project to watch. Designed by a former Oppo VP and running the popular CyanogenMod ROM, this smartphone could shake up things in the Android world, but we really don’t know that many details about the handset’s hardware yet. Last week’s announcement confirmed that the handset will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 SoC (MSM8974) running at 2.3Ghz, and now we’ve received the next spec for the OnePlus One, the inclusion of a 3100mAh battery. Whilst battery technology might not be the most exciting announcement, the latest news has revealed that the handset will feature a non-removable battery, which is sure to disappoint some, and also the inclusion of a mystery battery technology which is designed to “enhance and boost the user experience”.

The reason for opting for a non-removable battery stems from actually increasing the overall battery capacity and usage time of the handset. OnePLus CEO Pete Lau explained that adding in a removable battery would have involved more work and additional circuitry which would likely extend build time, result in a thicker device, and deprive the handset of some juice.

“A removable battery would have meant adding a protective layer to the motherboard as well as extra circuitry, resulting in a smaller battery (2500 mAh, 20% less battery juice!) or a significantly thicker phone.” Pete Lau
Given that this mystery technology is related to the battery, it could take the form of something similar to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Glance and Guru applications, which monitor your usage habits to better manage your battery life. Alternatively, it’s also possible that this mystery technology could be something hardware related, we already know that the Snapdragon 800 CPU is compatible with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology. Then again, OnePlus could have developed something entirely new. There’s still plenty more information to come regarding the OnePlus One before we have a complete picture of the device, including its screen size, resolution, camera features, storage options, as well as the handset’s physical design, so stay tuned.

The OnePlus One is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of the year, with a retail price of no more than $400.
